Home-Start UK: Moments that Shape the Future

Project background

As part of Home-Start’s 50th anniversary campaign The Power of Little Moments, CC Animation Studio was commissioned to make a new animation, told through the eyes and words of children, highlighting how the little moments made by volunteers add up and make a huge difference to the future health and happiness of children.

Children are at the heart of what Home-Start do, and they were keen that the stories within the animation were all based on real-life examples and told from the child’s perspective.

The animation uses drawings by children who are supported by local Home-Starts and features six children describing a moment their Home-Start volunteer has created for them.

Creating the animation

Artist Rosie Hunter thought carefully about how to include the beauty and freedom of children’s drawings within an animation that would tell the stories and convey the information Home-Start wanted to get across. Rosie‘s idea of a storybook theme was a natural fit for the subject. She then planned her own images with space to include artwork elements made by the children.

To make it both fun and straightforward for our young artists, each child received a pack in the form of an A4 printable sheet with instructions on what Rosie would like them to draw, such as a car, tiger or castle, plus an example image for inspiration and a nice big white box to draw in!

We asked the children to draw using just a black line. Rosie then traced these and coloured the final artwork digitally so that the animation would have a consistent colour scheme throughout, in line with Home-Start’s brand colours.

Adding voiceovers

For authentic children's voices, we recorded the voiceovers with the help of the primary school children from Bridge Learning Campus in Bristol. Danielle, our project manager, has a background in working with young people and children and is well-versed in making the recording process a fun and empowering experience for the children involved. We think the quality of the performances they gave even rivals that of our wonderful narrator, the comedian and TV star Romesh Ranganathan, who kindly lent his time to the project!
