NELFT: What is the National Child Measurement Programme?

Working with NELFT

We worked with North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT) and a group of children from Hunters Hall Primary School in Dagenham to produce an educational animation for school nurses to show to pupils in year 6, explaining the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP).

The brief

The team at NELFT know that some children might feel anxious or worried about being measured, perhaps fearing that they will be measured in front of others or that there might be a vaccination involved. Being measured might also raise difficult feelings for some children.

The aim of the animation is to ensure that children are informed and reassured about exactly what is involved on measuring day and how their data would be used afterwards.

Creating the animation

There is no better way to ensure you are meeting the needs of your target audience than working directly with them, so we were delighted to have input from children from Hunters Hall Primary School on this project, who provided their artwork to include in the film, as well as recording the voiceover.

At CC Animation Studio, we have a track record of making award-winning animations for children and young people, and we have developed a system to work collaboratively with them in a way that combines their artwork with our artist's designs and ensures that they have a real ownership stake in the project.

We are also lucky to have on staff a former teaching assistant with years of experience working with children and young people who knows how to make participation in the process something that is both fun and meaningful for those who take part.

The end result

The final helpful animated film is one which simply and clearly explains exactly what will happen on measurement day and addresses some of the common worries.

The explainer animation also illustrates that healthy bodies can come in all shapes and sizes and how taking part is good for everyone as the data used will help in the planning of better future healthcare services.
