Alcohol and Pregnancy: The Facts

Project background

Whilst many people are aware that there are risks associated with drinking alcohol during pregnancy, there are still myths that persist around the subject, and for some expectant mothers, there may be reasons that they find the idea of stopping drinking to be a challenging thought.

This animation, commissioned as a collaboration between South Yorkshire's local authorities – the four metropolitan boroughs of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield – aims to dispel those myths and educate those looking to conceive, or who are already pregnant, on the risks of drinking alcohol and the problems it can cause to the unborn child.

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a lifelong, often hidden, disability caused by babies being exposed to alcohol in the womb. It can lead to both physical disabilities as well as cognitive and behavioural difficulties.

Creating the animation

It was important to be able to reach a wide audience, so care was taken to avoid jargon and to keep the language clear and easy to understand throughout.

Whilst the key message – that there is no safe time, amount or type of alcohol that can be consumed during pregnancy – needed to be delivered in a strong manner, it also needed to be balanced with an understanding and non-judgemental tone so that anyone watching the film who is having difficulty with their drinking knows that there is help available to them, and that they will be met with compassion when accessing services for support.

Re-badging opportunities
