ACCORD: Generic Medicines and Biosimilars

Project background

Generic medicines are the drug equivalent of buying inexpensive, unbranded cornflakes or ketchup instead of a branded product – they are extremely similar to the original product and do the same job, but are often significantly cheaper!

The UK is one of the world’s largest prescribers of generic medicines and sees some of the lowest prices in Europe. The NHS already saves over £13 billion a year by using generic medicines.

Currently, this saving is mainly on generic versions of medicines that require simple molecules.

Aims of the explainer animation

This animation was designed to show government decision-makers how, with the right investment, modern, complex manufacturing processes have the potential to bring similar savings to the world of more complex medicines through the use of biosimilars. It also aims to promote and generate interest in their white paper on biosimilars and generic medicines in general.

Effective use of our Basic animation package

We were asked to work to a very tight deadline and a minimal budget for this project, using our Basic-style line-drawn animation to help bring this complicated topic to life.

Jo, one of our talented in-house artists, used a pared-down iconographic approach to create a clean and crisp animation style that was quick and easy to edit. Working in this way, we were able to meet the client’s deadline with time to spare, and without compromising on the professional quality of the finished explainer video.

Explainer animations for research dissemination

As specialists in research dissemination animation as well as health and social care animation, this really hit the cross-section of our specialities. We also really enjoyed the challenge of working quickly on this quite complicated brief!

We hope that this animation will help open decision-makers’ eyes to the cost-cutting potential of biosimilars and that by disseminating the information in a creative and entertaining way will also lead to a greater general knowledge of generic medicines and biosimilars.
