NSPCC: Emotional Wellbeing of Children in Care

Project background

This animation was created in collaboration with the NSPCC to explore the emotional experiences of children and young people in care. The aim was to create a visually engaging and emotionally resonant piece that would speak directly to professionals working in health and social care, while remaining sensitive to the voices and stories behind the issue.

Hybrid animation style

To achieve this, we used a hybrid animation style that combined real photographic images with hand-drawn illustrations. This approach allows us to ground the animation in real environments and situations while using expressive artwork to capture emotional nuance and convey internal experiences in a clear and meaningful way.

By blending these two mediums, we were able to navigate difficult themes – such as childhood trauma, attachment, and emotional wellbeing – in a way that is both accessible and empathetic.

Discovery and research

We began by working closely with the NSPCC team to understand the animation's context, purpose and tone. Our research phase was focused on accurately reflecting the emotional journeys of children in care, ensuring the final piece was informed, authentic and appropriate for the target audience.

Photo sourcing and visual style

We carefully selected real photographs to help root the story firmly in reality. These were chosen with sensitivity, ensuring they reflected a wide range of care experiences while maintaining anonymity and ethical integrity. The photography provided a strong documentary-style foundation for the visuals.

Hand-drawn illustration

The illustrated elements bring emotional depth and storytelling flair to the piece. These elements were layered over the photographs or animated independently to symbolise internal thoughts, transitions and emotional landscapes.

This approach made it possible to visualise abstract themes such as resilience, belonging, and emotional growth in a simple, meaningful way.

Animation and integration

We seamlessly integrated the photographic and illustrated elements through careful animation and thoughtful transitions. This visual language was designed to flow between realism and metaphor, encouraging viewers to connect with the story on both practical and emotional levels.

Sound design and voiceover

A calm, reassuring voiceover leads the narrative, with a young actor giving voice to the experience of a child in the foster system. The voiceover is supported by subtle music and sound design. This audio layer helps build a sense of safety and emotional clarity, ensuring the viewer can focus on the message.

The end result

This project highlights how animation for health and social care can be both powerful and sensitive, especially when exploring themes such as mental health, children’s emotional wellbeing, and support within the care system. By blending real-world photography with expressive illustration, we created a piece that feels both grounded and deeply human.
